How to Properly Store Your Air Conditioner for the Winter: Tips and Tricks

The harsh winter is right around the corner, and many of you will be storing your A/C unit for the long cold months. But don’t just pack up your outdoor unit and put it in your basement. If you do so, your unit may not work efficiently or may not work at all once you turn the unit on again to be used once the cold season ends.

You can take some steps to ensure your A/C is in tip-top shape when you use it again in the summer. Here are a few of them:

    Clean the Outdoor Unit

There’s no need to contact an A/C maintenance service provider in Longview, TX for this task, but you can if you want to. The important thing is to get the outdoor unit clean. If you have ever had to take part in the cleaning process, then you probably have witnessed just how much dirt and grime can build up on your unit over the summer months.

Dirt is an arch-enemy of your air conditioning unit. So if you store your cooling system without checking its parts for dirt build-up and cleaning it up, don’t expect a seamlessly working A/C when you get it out of your storage area.

Make Sure the Unit is Dry

After cleaning the cooling system, please ensure all components are dry before packing and storing the unit. Just imagine what would happen if you left a metal wet for a long time? You’re right; it will rust. And the same thing might happen with your A/C. Moisture can also lead to other problems like mold growth.

    Check the A/C for Damage

Inspect your A/C for any damage. You can do it while cleaning the unit; it’s like hitting two birds with one stone. If your unit shows signs of damage (if it doesn’t work like the way it used to when it’s brand new, there’s something wrong inside of the unit), call a certified air conditioning repair tech.

Simply schedule a routine fall A/C maintenance service in Longview, TX so all possible issues would be detected and fixed before you store the unit. By doing so, you can enjoy a comfortable summer without the inconveniences of a broken air conditioning unit.

    Cover the Unit Properly

If you can’t move your A/C unit to your storage area, protect it from harsh winter weather by covering it up with plastic or vinyl cover. A tarp is also an option. Just make sure that the entire unit is covered and secured. The cover should be able to withstand strong winds. You can use vinyl rope or bungee cords to fasten the cover.

    Insulate the Pipes

The pipes also need to be covered properly. If there’s no protection, the pipes can freeze when the temperatures drop. If not correctly thawed, the pipes may burst. So save yourself some headache by protecting the pipes using foam pipe covers.

Last but not least, choose where to store your A/C carefully. Make sure the area doesn’t get damp or flooded or infested with pests.

If you follow the tips listed above and use some common sense on how to best store your air conditioning unit for winter, keeping the unit running smoothly before its time again next year will be a breeze!

It may take some extra effort on your part, but it is worth it in the end. Just think of every penny you can save towards future repairs that could have been prevented by taking these simple precautions beforehand.

If you’re having trouble with any of the processes listed above or want to schedule an A/C maintenance service in Longview, TX, contact Napps Cooling, Heating & Plumbing at 903-758-6482. The company offers industry-certified maintenance programs, so you can be sure it’s worth your money and trust.
